Over nearly three decades the eThekwini Water and Sanitation (Durban, South Africa) has been on a journey to develop a sustainable approach to the expansion and maintenance of an extensive cathodic protection system. The long-term objective of the cathodic protection system is to extend the life of buried pipeline assets.
Challenges
Significant challenges are faced and include developing a system from scratch, geographical dispersion of assets, significant stray current, third party pipeline interaction, maintenance and monitoring. At a management level the key focus areas included strategic choices, lack of in-house skills, vandalism, theft, commercial / procurement constraints, the selection and appointment of suitable consultants and contractors to implement the long term philosophy.
Reignite has been an integral part of the technical support team that has crafted technical specifications, standards, drawings, contract documents and commercial frameworks to assist with the delivery of sound engineering solutions. Works have encompassed field investigations, engineering, detailed design and full tender process management with specialised engineering services for more complex works.
